HECHEN SUN

CELLO

Hechen Sun is a Chinese cellist who started to play cello at the age of 7 under Jifu Wang. After being accepted to the Music Middle School Affiliated to Shanghai Music Conservatory at 10 years old, he studied with Meijuan Lieu. He won the first prize in the 2012 American Protege International Concerto Competition, getting to perform Saint-Saens’ Cello Concerto in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. At 13 years old, he moved to Canada to study at the Mount Royal University Honor Academy, where he studied with John Kadz and Johanne Perron. During this time, he received the gold prize at the HEath Jean Memorial Cello Concerto Competition and was also the winner of multiple categories in the 2014 Calgary Performing Arts Festival. In 2017, Hechen was accepted into the Juilliard Pre-College Division, where he studied with Sieun Lin. He won the Honorable Prize at the Berlin Rising Star International Competition of 2019. Following his time at Juilliard, he went to the New England Conservatory, where he studied under Lluis Claret for his Bachelor’s degree. In 2022, he received the second prize in the Bellagrande international competition. In 2023, he achieved the bachelor of music in NEC, and has countinuing his Master degree of Cello study at New England Conservatory.He has received his Master degree of Cello Performance and academic honors at the New England Conservatory in 2025. He is now studying with Julia Lichten, the cello professor at MSM.

Performance Experience:

•Performed at prestigious venues including the Carnegie Weill Hall, Shanghai Steinway & Sons, Shanghai Music Hall, Calgary, and Boston etc…

•Studied with renowned cellists including Bonian Tian, Hans Jensen, Richard Aaron, Edward Arron, and others
